The Virgin of Guadalupe is the name given to the Virgin Mary who, according to believers, appeared to a native of Mexico in 1531.

A Spanish legend says that at the beginning of the 12th century a cowherd from Extremadura by the name of Gil Cordero found on the banks of the Guadalupe River a small image of the Virgin Mary.
